HDPE Blow Molding Machine

HDPE is the most widely used material in extrusion blow molding.

Why HDPE for blow molding?

HDPE (high-density polyethylene) has a high strength-to-density ratio, good chemical resistance and long service life, so it is the standard material for containers that must not leak or crack. It is the usual choice for jerry cans and chemical drums, and HDPE milk bottles are impact resistant, shatterproof, leakproof and recyclable. Compare HDPE with PP, PVC and PET in what is the best material for blow molding.

HDPE blow molding machines by container size

Container Typical HDPE products Tongda models
Up to 5 L Daily chemical bottles, milk bottles, motor oil bottles HTS II-5L, HSE-5L
8 to 15 L Jerry cans, lubricant containers HTS II-8L, HS II-12L, HS II-15L
20 to 50 L Chemical drums, stackable buckets TDB-25F, HS II-30L, TDB-50F
120 to 350 L Open-top and closed drums TDB-120F, TDB-250F/P, TDW-350F
1,000 L and above IBC tanks, water tanks TDB-1000L, HT-1500L

How an HDPE machine is set up

  • Screw and die head are matched to the HDPE grade and the container, so the melt is even and the parison does not sag.
  • Parison wall thickness control puts material where the container needs strength, such as handles, corners and the base. Read how wall thickness control works.
  • View strips and layers. For jerry cans and drums that need a visible fill level, machines can be fitted with a view strip, and single-layer or multilayer configurations are available for selected models.
  • Drive type. Choose hydraulic, servo or fully electric according to container size, energy cost and cleanliness.

Regrind and recycled HDPE

Flash trimmed from your own containers can be ground and fed back into production; ask our engineers how much regrind your product can take. Post-consumer HDPE bottles are a different matter: after crushing and drying they cannot simply be blown again. See can HDPE bottles be blown directly after being crushed and dried.

Can one blow molding machine run both HDPE and PP?

Extrusion blow molding machines process both HDPE and PP. Tell us both materials when you request a quotation so the screw and die head are configured for them.

Which HDPE blow molding machine do I need for jerry cans?

Double station HTS II and HS II machines are the usual choice for 5 to 30 L jerry cans. See the jerry can blow molding machine page.

Can I see an HDPE production line running?

Yes. Customers are welcome to visit the Tongda factory in Zhangjiagang, Jiangsu, to see machines in production before ordering. You can also watch them running in our video library.
